Family values
Yate Supplies/Bioclarity is a family run business which started in 1982, currently employs approximately 90 members of staff in varying roles to service its’ Customer database. Having values as a business is key to its success, and our values are our Service, Communication, Quality, Honesty, Entrepreneurship and Humility.
Service
From our perspective, service is a key part of what we do; we are a service-led industry and, ultimately, if we offer a good service our customer retention should be greater if, of course, the price is correct! As a family business we will take longer term risks when it comes to profitability for the stability of our customer base and also the stability of our workforce and the jobs we offer. We should all be clear that going the extra mile to please the customer is what will ensure we stay a strong and competitive business for many years to come. All our employees should remember this in everything they do at work as we are all here to service the customer.
Communication
Of course, communication is important in every business and the flow of such information is paramount to our success, as it enables individuals to express their needs desires and concerns. Generally, communication in family businesses is more complex and intertwined, as the family members at the top can delve into many areas of the business because they care. Although the communication is more complex, we are hopefully more direct, honest and as a result we are far more open about how the business is developing and changing with our employees.
Quality
There is quality in the service we all offer as individuals to our customers and suppliers; there is quality in the products we sell to enable our customers to offer their services to their customers; there is also quality in the communication we have between each other; and finally there is a quality of life - let’s work hard to maintain a good quality of life but never forget that we have our own families to nurture and spend time with and it is important to find the work/life balance.
Honesty and Openness
This is a three way process, our customer would like us, as a business, to be open to them, we want to be as open and honest as we can to our employees and in return we expect our employees to be honest and open to us. What you do effects the legacy of this business and the decisions we make are not to do with keeping shareholders happy it is to do with maintaining a legacy, ensuring the hard work and pain the family put into getting the business off of the ground is maintained.
Entrepreneurship
Without this we would, of course, not have a business but as we all know the risks that have to be taken to be an entrepreneur are great, it is found in many family businesses as a key value even if the business is well established. It hopefully spawns new ideas, diversity and generally a competitive advantage through the generation and exploitation of new sources. We have seen this time and time again in our business, new schemes, and new ways of working and new types of customers. It is important that we embrace these new ways of working as diversity and change is what sets us apart from competitors in our industry.
Humility
This is something very closely linked to family businesses as we have come from such humble beginnings. Maintaining a humble approach to all we do is important as what we do should speak for itself and not seek the spotlight to gain this kind of recognition.
